The great tradition of the International Jazz Festival held at Eilat started in October 1987 following the initiative of Eilat's city council, aided by the Ministry of Culture, the Ministry of Tourism and with the support of several businesses.
Although the first festival was not attended by a large audience, it was clear to everyone involved that the festival has great potential as the only international jazz festival in Israel. Each year, the festival not only provides thousands of Israeli jazz fans the opportunity to hear the best international jazz artists, but to do so in a unique atmosphere as the event is held at the port of Eilat, at the Red Sea.
Along the years the festival's audience has grown, in recent years over 70,000 people arrive each year. Many are people who attend the festival every year and plan their annual vacation around the festival. The festival is the only festival in Israel to which hundreds of tourists from all over the world attend every year.
The festival takes place during the last week of August and includes 34 to 36 performances. This year the festival will take place during the dates 25.8-28.8.
Traditionally there is a night jam session following the end of the "official" performances lasting until sunrise to which entry is free. Many of the best jazz artists who preformed at the festival will play at the jam session that will be held at the pool area of the Riviera hotel.
In addition, the festival conducts master's classes hosting world renowned artists. These workshops give those who are interested, and especially pupils and students, the opportunity to meet the artist, learn from them and even ask questions.
